Christian Schad Museum

Aschaffenburg

The permanent exhibition at the Christian Schad Museum in Aschaffenburg offers an internationally unparalleled overview of all creative periods of the exceptional artist Christian Schad. Works and life circumstances of the »Master of New Objectivity« are repeatedly placed in cultural-historical and political contexts on three floors, allowing visitors to gain a better understanding of this outstanding German protagonist of modern art against the backdrop of German and European history in the 20th century.

The first level provides an introductory overview of the artist’s origins, personality, and his later connection to Aschaffenburg. On the other two levels, over 200 works, including paintings, drawings, prints, collages, and "Schadographs" (photograms), can be discovered. They cover the various art movements during Schad's long creative life, from his art student days to his death.

A considerable number of large black-and-white photographs on wallpaper, precisely adhered to the walls by our experienced installation team on-site, form the literal historical backdrop for the original artworks. These are accompanied by numerous object texts made of rigid foam. Additional section texts on the walls and on six freestanding, custom-made plywood steles provide detailed information and mark thematic sections. A visual highlight, apart from the exhibits themselves, is the three-dimensional oversized book spine, perfectly dressed with printed self-adhesive film by our on-site fitters.

To clearly mark the museum from the outside, the modern glass entrance boasts distinctive gold, three-dimensional metal lettering, mounted on the printed glass elements using special adhesive.
